Heroes of Mangara: The Frost Crown is a hybrid Tower Defense/RPG. It centers around placing towers and filling them with heroes. Your heroes gain XP while fighting and they have skill trees that you upgrade out of the battle. It's a pleasant game and leveling up the heroes is fun, but the game gets far to grindy for my liking.
I definitely like the set up of this game. Your heroes are unique, they each have their own upgrades and there are enough damage types to keep their attacks relatively separate from one another. Once you place a hero on the field, you cannot place them again, so that helps keep up the feeling of RPG-ness. You unlock more heroes as the game goes along, as well as stronger towers to place them in.
"Okay everyone, it's time for our nightly meeting...Wait a minute...this doesn't look like my AA meeting!?"
The upgrades generally all follow the same set up, with upgrades for damage, upgrades for health, and a few different attacks. There are a few unique traits, especially when it comes down to specific resistances to elements, such as nature damage, but they all kind of fade together between the heroes. That means that the latter half of the game becomes very repetitive while leveling each hero.
I was turned off a bit by the interface during the levels, unfortunately, You cannot select enemies, and you cannot easily select the heroes. You can change their attacks, but the hovertext for their different abilities is unreliable and it's hard to pull up one after another. There is a panel that shows the incoming wave but the wave info is confusing and not explained well. It basically resulted in a kind of trial-and-error method to determine which damage worked better on which enemies.
"Man I hope the enemies don't like the cold, otherwise I'm fucked this round..."
I also got extremely frustrated with the level of grinding required later in the game. There are several points in the game where you're forced to go back and play through old levels multiple times to level up your heroes enough to progress through the game. There is thankfully a reset button, but it didn't really help the need to replay the same level 10 times in a row to advance. It was excruciating.
Well, this level hasn't changed since the last time I played it...
So, do I recommend playing it? I think the RPG elements are stronger than I've seen in most other tower defense games, and I love blending genres like that. However, because of the grinding issues, I found this game far too frustrating to be fulfilling. I enjoyed the gameplay in general, but the user interface definitely did not help. So, I think if you're a big tower defense fan it's probably worth checking out. If you're not a big tower defense buff, I'd say this is a title you can skip to save some frustration.
