E3 2014 Roundup - The Games I'm Excited About

Now that E3 has drawn to a close, I'd like to take a moment to discuss the games that I'm most excited about:

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

For anyone who hasn't seen the trailer, you need to quickly go watch it. I had heard rumors about some sort of bundled Halo game coming out in lieu of Halo 5, but it's still very exciting to have confirmation. The fact that there isn't all encompassing backwards compatibility on the Xbox One pretty much ensured that a set like this would be released, and with Halo 2 getting the "Anniversary" makeover just like CE, it will be more impressive than ever.

But more than just the campaigns being ported to a shiny new console, the feature I'm most excited about is the return of the classic Halo 2 multiplayer experience. As I mentioned in my article about Halo Bashing, I never got a chance to play the Halo 2 multiplayer. And unlike the Halo: CE Anniversary multiplayer, which was basically just an update for the Reach multiplayer, this is actually going to be true to the original form, essentially redelivering the true original form. I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing it.

Oh, and it'll include the Halo Digital Series, Halo: Nightfall, and the Halo 5 Multiplayer Beta Access. That helps too.

Hyrule Warriors

I've always been a Zelda fan, although I've dropped off in the years since Twilight Princess. It's tough to allocate time to such an immersive game without large blocks of time to play (thanks, real life). Skyward Sword is one of my largest regrets from the previous generation, and I still plan on playing through it one of these days.

But this new entry excites me for two reasons. First, while I love the series, each game is definitely pretty much the same. This is a nice divergence from the norm, delivering a new feeling, a new gameplay style, while still exploring the universe and being a fun storyline in the world of Hyrule. Secondly, it will feature multiplayer (through the Gamepad) which means I'll have occasions to play this with my girlfriend, therefore making it much easier to devote time towards it. Local multiplayer is almost a must for me these days with big retail titles, and this promises just that, where most Zelda games can't.

And with so many playable characters and fan favorites, this will almost certainly be a well received game.

Star Wars: Battlefront

I was a huge Battlefront fan when it first came out. And I played Battlefront II religiously for much of my high school years. Back when Lucasarts folded and there were rumblings of a cancelled Battlefront III, I was quite livid. Now, the dream is alive again and the few snippets we saw from "Early in Engine" footage are breath taking.

There isn't much info about this game yet, but given that it's being made by DICE, it will be a high quality game. And yes, I wan't a big fan of Battlefield 3, but even if the game has a steep difficulty curve, I'll devote the necessary brain-melting time towards improving my skills in the game, because to me, Star Wars: Battlefront is worth it.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

I'm a fan of the Super Smash series as well, and while this was inevitable, some of the upcoming features were not. The addition that caught my attention was the ability to alter which moves your player will hold in his or her arsenal. That will add much higher levels of customization and fighting styles, leading to even more compelling gameplay and matches. I can't wait to step back into the area with Pit (my favorite from Brawl) to ruin some friendships.

Now, the addition of Miis and the Wii Fit Trainer have me scratching my head a bit, but all the same, this is shaping up to the be a fantastic game. And if Mario Kart 8 is any indication, the Wii U seems to be Nintendo's way of showcasing old favorites with large rosters and beautiful level designs. The gameplay looks like it still retains most of what we all loved in the previous versions, and quite frankly if all they do is recreate the same old entry and put it in HD, I'll be pre-ordering right away.

Let me know what you're most excited about from E3 2014!

Until next time,

Ryan
