It's So Real It's Creepy - Uncanny Valley - Ryviews Ryport

San Diego Comic Con just happened. Hooray!

One of the many gems to come out of it was the Cinematic Trailer for the Halo 2 Anniversary Edition packaged in The Master Chief Collection for the Xbox One. It looked, to put it scientifically, friggin' sweet. And when I'm looking at the faces featured in that trailer, I'm astonished by how lifelike they look without triggering the "so close, but yet so far" reflex in my head.

Teamwork At Aperture Labs - Portal 2 Ryview

Portal 2, by Valve.

My Recommendation: It's a wonderful game full of dry, dark humor and fantastic problem solving. Both the single player and cooperative modes are great if you like puzzle platforming and disembodied robot voices quietly insulting you.

Cute Cats and Heavy Grade Explosives - Battleblock Theater Freebie Ryview

Battleblock Theater, by The Behemoth.

Battleblock Theater is currently free as part of Xbox Live Games With Gold until July 31, 2014.

My recommendation: This is a hilarious, amazingly fun game. You definitely need to download it and try it out.

Comedy In Video Games - Ryviews Ryport

These days, so many AAA blockbuster games are known for gritty, serious action. They thrill, they excite, and they keep us at the edge of our couch, but they suck the humor out of the room pretty fast. Don't get me wrong, I love lots of those blockbuster games, but when it gets right down to it, if I'm sitting down to play something I might want to chuckle a bit rather than become a paranoid wreck wondering what monstrosity is sneaking up on me from behind.

How Many Sieges Were There, Really? - Dungeon Siege III Late to the Party Xbox 360 Ryview

Dungeon Siege III, by Obsidian Entertainment.

Recommendation: It's a great RPG for co-op, and it's definitely a fun entry. It's definitely a great game if you love hack and slash action RPGs, it's not great if you want a more in depth story or meaningful skill trees. And if you're a solo gamer, you're probably better served just playing Dragon Age or Skyrim.

Is That A Gigantic Cod Piece or Is He Happy To See Me - Graphics in Video Games - Ryviews Ryport

Graphics are a tremendously important part of the gameplay experience. I don't mean cutting edge realism is required in every game. I mean that a game's choice of graphical style and feeling have a very large bearing on the overall enjoyment level, especially for long term. Do the big game companies put too much of an emphasis on it? Do bad graphics damage replay value for decades to come?

Hint: My answers are maybe and sometimes.

Because Who Doesn't Love Killing Bad Guys With Lightsabers - Knights of the Old Republic iOS Ryview

Knights of the Old Republic, by Aspyr Media, Inc.

Recommendation: Great for nostalgia, and a truly wonderful port, but the $9.99 price is steep for a re-buy, so wait for a sale. If you're new to the game, this is a great deal and it's a great way to play a classic.

RPGs Have Never Been So Angry - Angry Birds Epic - iOS Ryview

Angry Birds Epic, by Rovio Entertainment.

My Recommendation: It's freemium, and it's pushing the boundaries of how far you can go without paying, but overall it's a quality RPG that can still be enjoyed for free, perhaps not beaten easily.

Invertebrates Kill Each Other With Sheep and Old Women - Worms 3 iOS Ryview

Worms 3, by Team17.

Recommendation: It's a solid game and it's a great port to the iOS, but at $4.99, I'm not sure it's worth it unless you're in love with the franchise. If you're on the fence, wait for it to go on sale.
