Edit: I erroneously implied in an earlier title that Sonic was not featured in Brawl. Sorry, internet.
Let's be honest, up until very recently my Wii U was gathering dust. I bought and enjoyed Mario Kart 8, but after I got a few thrills out of it I went back to playing my Xboxes (Xboxi?) and so forth. But now, with the release of Super Smash Bros., my lust for Nintendo has returned, and I'm suddenly struck with a fervor to play more Nintendo games than ever!
See, a game like Super Smash Bros. highlights Nintendo's vast character library, which is a great thing from a marketing point of view. The whole game is about famous characters fighting each other, so it's only natural that it might make you revisit some game with Mario, Link, or Samus, and perhaps even buy new ones.
As one does.
So, kudos to Nintendo for reinvigorating my love affair with them. I used to be a Nintendo exclusive gamer, you know, before I liked First Person Shooters that didn't have the name "Goldeneye". This is helping to at least welcome the console back into my inner circle.
Anyway, enough about my new obsession with Nintendo, let's talk about the game! It's pretty friggin' awesome, as games go, although there are definitely still some drawbacks. I love that you can do a bunch of challenges and modes as a single player or a local team, I think that's fantastic. I love the challenges, I love the home run contest, and the classic mode has some nice flair to it now that it's set as trophies on a tabletop fighting each other.
It even allows for 8-player local gaming, which I have not actually tried out yet because I don't have 8 friends. And even if I did, I'm not sure how they'd all fit around my television. But that brings me to my first obvious frustration with the game: that mode isn't available for online play. Why on earth would you only allow for 8 players locally? That seems totally oxymoronic, I can't imagine that it's easier to play with 8 players locally than it is to play with 8 players online. I'm a huge proponent of local multiplayer and I love that Nintendo is embracing it, but this is kind of ridiculous.
Time to ruin some friendships
I also wish you could do the challenges and such online. Now, don't get me wrong, if I had to pick between the two, I'd always pick local co-op, but why not offer both? If you can already do matchmaking or friend lobbies for normal smashing, surely it can't be that different to go through the same process for a different game mode. You could easily assign one person as the leader, who basically chooses what challenges to go to, or who to fight on the classic board.
Aside from online multiplayer functionality, it's a pretty solid game. It feels true to its predecessors while feeling fresh and crisp, especially with some nice move tweaks and new characters. The roster is gigantic, but it doesn't necessarily feel oppressive. It's just up to the gamer to find what play style and move set is best for their own strategy.
I think it's definitely a must have game for any Nintendo fans, or anyone who likes the action fighting style of this genre. It's a great homage to Nintendo lore, it has some solid single player content, and it has the option to let you duke it out online with other fighters if you're up for that sort of thing.
