Exactly one year ago (and ten days, but who's counting) I started a blog called Ryan's Game Ryviews (it's this blog).
Why?
You may stay awake late at night wondering why some yahoo would start a video game blog. If you do, I urge you to seek medical advice.
But for those of your who are suddenly curious, I'll tell you. And I'm doing so in the purest form: the written word. Do you know why? Because this is how my blog started, and no matter how many videos I make, I still do miss having the bulk of this blog be written. But people don't read blogs, they watch videos (although usually those videos involve cats or russian dash-cams, neither of which are prominently featured on my youtube channel).
Oh god! [1]
At any rate, I started this blog because of two nonsensical words - Rooster Teeth. I had recently fallen in love with Red vs Blue, and then subsequently fallen in love with Achievement Hunter. It's fantastic entertainment, and I was captivated by the concept that some people are able to do this for a living.
Rooster Teeth: Because 'cock bite' sounds too immature
Initially, I was hoping to get a job there, but after considering the actual possibility of that happening, I decided I still wanted to do something that matched my passions* AND was achievable.
So I started my blog.
Now, a year later, it's clear to me that this is not an easy life choice. I do still have my previous full time job (And it's a good thing too, because this blog has barely made enough for me to eat a meal at a restaurant that's not condemned by the health inspector), but I'd like for this to one day be my career. And I've got to admit, this is surprisingly difficult work.
I had a major start, in just a few months I was skyrocketing to new heights in readership and viewership, only to see that come to a screeching halt in the several months that followed. My blog in the end of the year was performing worse than the month after I started, and that's saying something.
But, through all that, I'm continuing to write and make videos, and I'm doing it because I enjoy it. Yes, I wish this blog made me six figures so I could sit at home and make a living out of playing video games. But it almost certainly never will, and I've come to terms with that. So for now, I'll keep doing this blog, if only for the satisfaction of having a motivation to play flash games, and for those 2 people to watch a video and think "Yeah, I agree, this guy really helped me out."
To both of you, thanks for watching and reading. I hope the next year treats you well.
Until next time,
Ryan
