For those of you who are unaware, Lazer Team is a movie that was crowdfunded through IndieGoGo. It tells the tale of 4 nobodys who stumble upon some alien technology. Hilarity ensues. You know the drill.
I would like to point out that I am a rather big fan of Rooster Teeth. I find quite a bit of their content funny, I've been a fan of Red vs Blue for a long time, and I love Achievement Hunter. However, I did indeed have some reservations about this movie. I've never been a big fan of Rooster Teeth's live action scripted content. I usually found them a bit awkward, or I felt the jokes fell flat.
I was pleasantly surprised by the final product.
Obviously since this is still a fairly low budget movie, you can't go in expecting a blockbuster. But even without a necessary frame of reference, this is a pretty good movie. There were a few spots when the acting wasn't great, but overall the acting was solid. There were similarly a few spots when I didn't care for the script, but there were also lines that were very refreshing and meaningful.
Also a nice smattering of physical humor for people like me to giggle at [1]
The plot actually kept me engaged, as well. I didn't expect to really be too impressed by it, but it delivered a solid story and an exciting climax.
The main four characters all played their parts well. Colton Dunn was definitely the shining star (which is predictable since he's been in real TV), but the 3 others (all Rooster Teeth mainstays) played off each other well and kept the humor levels high. My biggest complaint was the Burnie had the most moments of questionable acting talent; several of his lines lost a bit of their gravitas. However, that may have been a result of editing rather than his acting abilities. I've always been very impressed by his voice acting in RvB.
Do I expect it to be nominated for an award I've heard of? Probably not. Possibly an award I haven't heard of, but I really can't speculate. The important thing is that I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and I'm proud to say that I was a backer.
If you're a fan of Rooster Teeth, I definitely think the movie is a must see. If you've never even heard of Rooster Teeth, then I'd still recommend it if you like Sci-Fi, humor, Indie films, and/or British accents. If you hate all of those things, you should probably just go see The Revenant again.
