I want to start off by pointing out that this is a spoiler free ryview. But in my usual fashion, I'm obviously discussing the movie a little so if you really want to go in blind, then close this page and see the movie.

Okay, now that you've had time to watch the movie (or wait for 2 hours, if you chose not to), let's get into this thing.
Star Trek Beyond is the third installment of the "reboot" trilogy that started in 2009. It features most of the cast returning (everyone you'd expect), and it feels fairly similar to the previous two entries. So, if you liked those, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, then you should probably only see this if you really love Idris Elba's voice.
Now, I felt that this movie focused very heavily on Kirk. I'm not necessarily complaining about that, but even compared to the last two this felt very Kirk heavy. There were some notable Spock and Scotty subplots, but those felt fairly stunted. It was the Kirk show, and Chris Pine did a fairly good job of it, but I like the ensemble cast style of Star Trek old and new, so this was a bit of a letdown in that regard.

The first half of the movie seemed fairly grounded (no puns), where most of this made some sense, with very few "Oh come on!" moments. Unfortunately, that was not sustained throughout the film. Slowly but surely, there were quite a few McGuffins and stupid plot conveniences that popped up. Some of these were small, some of them were large. And when you have a sci-fi movie that makes you say "No, this is too unrealistic", you know something has gone wrong.
That being said, I enjoyed watching it. Several of those McGuffins made me smile, and I was ready to cheer by the end. It's a solid adventure romp. I also thought the acting was all fairly good, there weren't any scenes where I was taken away from the fantasy with someone delivering a terrible line. And along with that, editing and scripting were presentable. Some lines seemed a bit overly hammy, but for the most part I thought it was fairly one-liner free. The humor in the movie worked, and the emotional scenes delivered what they needed to.

So, I guess my recommendation to anyone on the fence is to go with how much you like Star Trek or Science Fiction action movies. I don't think this is a great reach-across-the-aisle sort of movie, but I would also counter that by saying it handles its own genre very well. Go see it if you're into that sort of thing, don't if you're not. You should go see Ghostbusters again to make sure it doesn't have quite the box office loss they're expecting.
And for those of you who are wondering how low I will sink for my movie ryviews, I'm seeing Suicide Squad next week.
