Kubo and the Two Strings (hereby known as Kubo so I can be lazier about it), is a stop motion animation film about a young boy who goes on a wondrous quest and does some magic.
The movie itself was pretty awesome. Aside from the very impressive visual work (and a cool behind-the-scenes look during the credits), the story was pretty powerful. The character development was well done, the humor was well placed, and the writing felt very real.
Our title character was fun to watch. He definitely kept me entertained and engaged in the emotion of the story. His cohorts (as see in the trailers, a monkey and a beetle) were equally enjoyable. There were some usual tropes, such as the monkey being the voice of reason-style master or the beetle being the brash warrior/comic relief, but by the end several of these were either flipped on their end or taken to some pretty awesome places.
The magic that's employed in the movie usually involved Kubo manipulating paper with his music, and it was very fun to watch. It made for some gorgeous scenes that in at least a few instances really stole the show. This is a perfect movie for exemplifying why I love animation.
The writing was pretty solid. There were definitely a few moments where I had to groan at an obviously kid friendly joke, but by and large a lot of the comedy was enjoyable for adults as well, and the emotion side of the story definitely elevated the desired audience. While I don't think I actually cried, I definitely came damn close.
In case it's not apparent, I thought this was a great movie. It was everything I wanted it to be, and it left me feeling very satisfied. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has a slight interest in animation, or anyone with kids who can handle slightly tense scenes. There isn't much violence but there's quite a bit of implied violence, and definitely some PG-13 style horror.
And if you aren't a fan of animation, I'd still encourage you to give this a try. It's a really powerful movie. Catch it in theaters while you can!
Let me know what you think in the comments!
Until next time,
Ryan
