Ryan's Rycommendation: If you love Chess but hate how every game is the same, then download this app and start chessing. If you crave consistency (and sanity), you might want to approach this game with caution, but every chess fan (and even you other people) should try out this app, it's pretty solid.



Really Bad Chess is a chess game (go figure) where you start with fairly random pieces every game (along with your AI opponent). There is a 'ranked' mode where your enemy's pieces get better than yours during each successive match. There are also daily challenge maps where you try to win in the fewest moves and compare your score to others globally. And there's a weekly challenge, and freeplay. Good stuff.

And if you shell out $2.99, you get rid of banner ads, buy some undos, and unlock the coveted 1v1 mode.

Anywho, it plays like normal chess, albeit from a different starting point. I won't go into the finer points of chess, but suffice it to say that you're trying to capture the enemy king, and if you need more background than that, go read about the rules of chess and come back. I'll wait.

That was fast.

It felt like no time at all to me.

I'm silly.

The game itself keeps my attention because of the ever changing boards. The amount of variety caused by sometimes starting with 7 knights is pretty high. And if you're a fan of normal chess like me, this creates some pretty cool possibilities. Like trying to capture a king with a bunch of bishops. It's tough.

I should have probably stolen some of those lines for my rycommendation, but I'm too lazy to change it now...[2]

But it's a good tough. This is definitely the type of game that makes you feel good upon winning. And even when you lose, it's a bit of a challenge to try harder next time. That's a beauty of chess, I suppose.

And the interface is quite nice. It does a good job of highlight previous moves and helping you map out your next. As chess goes, this is a solid showing, and honestly based on some lackluster chess games I've played in my time, that's actually fairly high praise.

So play it! If you hate chess, maybe don't. But unless you hate the game, this is probably worth at least an afternoon of fun. Probably more, if you're a fan. Or if you get bored often. Don't forget this game can be played offline. Those are getting harder to find lately.
